The Winnipeg Jets are following in the footsteps of the Blue Bombers and stepping up to the plate.

The licence plate, that is.

The NHL team unveiled a specialty licence plate on Tuesday morning.

It features the Jets primary logo on the left side and the phrase "Fuelled by Passion" at the bottom, between the spaces for the insurance stickers.

The plates will sell at Autopac agencies around the province for $70, starting Dec. 12.

Of the fee, $30 will go to the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation, which funds various charities. The rest will be shared between Manitoba Public Insurance and the province.

"This provides a great opportunity for hockey fans across Manitoba to show their passion for the Jets while assisting our foundation's continuing mandate to support numerous initiatives across our community," said Jets chairman and governor Mark Chipman.

A total of 20,000 plates will be available but another run is possible, depending on demand, said True North spokesman Scott Brown.

The Jets plate is the third specialty plate available in the province. In 2004, Manitoba approved the issuing of a specialty licence plate to honour veterans.

The Bomber plate came out in June 2011.

The return of NHL hockey to Winnipeg has also been immortalized by a set of new postage stamps.

Canada Post unveiled three commemorative stamps last week to celebrate the rebirth of the Winnipeg Jets franchise this year.

Two of the stamps show the Jets' logos, while the third depicts the team's first goal scored on home ice.
