A 19-year-old Winnipeg woman is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her 84-year-old grandmother.

The charge was laid Thursday, a day after the elderly woman was found inside a split-level home on Pine Bluff Road, in the city's Niakwa area, where she was suffering serious upper body injuries.

She was taken to hospital where she later died, police said.

Neighbours told CBC News that a man and woman lived in the home with two sons, a daughter, and a grandmother.

“It was shocking, yeah, it was frightening for the whole block. It was difficult because nothing like this has ever happened in this area that I know of anyway,” said Gary Kaban, who lives nearby.

The death is the city's 31st homicide of the year.

The Niakwa area is in the southeast part of the city.
