Elections Manitoba is trying to make it more difficult for voters to find an excuse to skip a trip to the ballot box in the upcoming provincial election.

There are now 50 per cent more advance voting locations, for a total of about 300 locations across the province.

Advance voting goes from Saturday, Sept. 24 to Saturday, Oct. 1, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25).

Voters can cast a ballot at any advance voting place in the province.

Polls at universities will also be open on election day and Elections Manitoba is opening the polls on voting day, Oct. 4, an hour earlier at 7 a.m.

"We have in Manitoba, nine days of voting — eight in advance and one on election day," said Mary Skanderbeg, spokeswoman at Elections Manitoba.

Skanderbeg said a special effort is being made to attract young people to vote, by having a presence in the malls and universities.

Voter turnout in Manitoba has tumbled in the last several elections and young people are the least likely to vote.

Skanderbeg said anyone with proper ID can vote at a number of malls, universities and community colleges.

There will even be an advance poll at Winnipeg's James Armstrong Richardson International Airport.

"It's very simple, if we are in the malls, etcetera, just take a pencil and put an X on a piece of paper," said Skanderbeg.
