Winnipeg police officers at the scene of a stabbing on Kennedy Street early Sunday morning. (Shaun McLeod/CBC)A 16-year-old boy is in critical but stable condition after being stabbed in downtown Winnipeg early Sunday morning.
Police say they received a call about the stabbing, located outside an apartment complex on the 300 block of Kennedy Street, just before 2 a.m.
The boy sustained serious injuries to his upper and lower body, according to police.
This marks the second time a teenager has been stabbed in Winnipeg this weekend.
Early Saturday morning, a 15-year-old was stabbed multiple times near the intersection of College Avenue and Aikins Street in an unrelated incident. That teen is also in critical condition in hospital.
Police say Saturday's case may have been gang-related.
Winnipeg Police Service Const. Jason Michalyshen said more must be done to help the city's youth.
"Why is this happening, and how do we reach out to some of our youth with respect to being involved in this kind of activity, and how can we prevent it?" Michalyshen told CBC News on Sunday.
"We have to continue to offer young people positive alternate ways of going through their days."
The police service's major crimes section is investigating both incidents. No arrests were made as of midday Sunday.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
