Fisher Branch, MB

RCMP have found a body in the Rural Municipality of Fisher, southeast of Poplarfield, and are trying to determine whether it's that of a woman reported missing last month.

Police were called to the area on Saturday evening, when a group searching for Nancy Swenty found a black "Co-op" jacket along the roadway.

RCMP Sgt. Line Karpish said RCMP secured the area about 25 kilometers from Swenty's home, and found human remains not far from the jacket.

She said the private search arranged by family and friends of Swenty was invaluable.

"They will search in some areas that we wouldn't necessarily go and search because we have nothing to lead us there specifically," she said.

Swenty, 33, of the RM of Fisher near Fisher Branch in the province's north Interlake region, was reported missing by her mother on July 28 after she failed to show up for work that morning.

Police said Swenty had been wearing a black "Co-op" jacket, a black and white zebra print shirt, black pants and black shoes.

Her vehicle was found in the Fraserwood area on July 31.

The identity of the remains has not been determined.

An autopsy will be done in Winnipeg.
