Shattered glass after this home on Langside St. was hit by gunfire Monday.

A 19-year-old man faces charges after someone in a pickup truck fired at least one shot through the front window of a west end Winnipeg house, Monday.

Police chased the pickup truck after gunfire struck the window of a house in the 600 block of Langside St. where a five-year-old child had been sitting minutes before, according to a woman who lives there.

Three adults were in the home at the time along with a child, police said. No one inside the house was injured.

But the pickup, which was stolen, later collided with an SUV at Selkirk Avenue and Aikins Street, following a brief pursuit by police.

Two people at the crash scene were taken to hospital including a 19-year-old man was taken into custody. Police also seized a sawed-off shotgun and ammunition.

A woman living in the Langside house, who did not want her name used, told CBC News she was in her kitchen when she heard glass breaking and what sounded like a car backfiring.

The truck pulled up and witnesses saw someone pull out a shotgun and fire into the living room window.

"My 17-year-old [daughter] was sitting right here and she just happened to get up and go to the kitchen and that's when it happened," said the mother of seven. "I grabbed my five-year-old, I didn't know where to hide him. I didn't know if they were going to keep shooting. This place is so accessible they could have shot us all up."

The woman speculated the incident was intended as a message for her son, 19, who is in jail and a member of a street gang. He started in the gang when he was 12.

Police also said the Langside house was targeted.

Const. Jason Mychalyshen said the 19-year-old man apprehended in the truck remains in hospital but will face numerous unspecified charges.
