Three men are in hospital following a shooting in a suburban Winnipeg garage Sunday night.
Neighbours on Lou Peltier Crescent, in a recently-built subdivision called Kildonan Green, told CBC News a man stood at the edge of a driveway around 9 p.m. and used a handgun to open fire at people inside the garage.
Police said three men, aged 26, 29 and 30, were shot and initially sent to hospital in critical condition. The 26-year-old and 30-year-old were struck in the upper and lower body, while the 29-year-old was hit in the lower body. Two of the victims were known to police in connection with weapons and drugs, CBC News has learned.
Police tape marks a wide perimeter around an open garage where three people were shot Sunday night. Shaun McLeod All were upgraded to stable condition on Monday.
Officers were knocking on doors throughout the evening and had blocked off a large area of the subdivision with yellow tape.
On Monday, the scene was littered with 38 evidence markers as investigators used a metal detector to scour the dirt yards, which do not yet have grass lawns.
Residents said they ran into their homes when they heard the gunfire. They said the man who lives in the house moved in just a few months ago, in about March.
One resident said he's seen several young men coming and going from the home very early in the morning on numerous occasions.
Several witnesses told CBC News a number of young men in their 20s or early 30s were in the garage when the shooting happened.
A turf war between the Hells Angels and Rock Machine motorcycle gangs has made headlines this summer in Winnipeg. Two businesses were firebombed and there have been a number of drive-by shootings.
While police on Monday said the Transcona shooting doesn't appear to be linked to that battle, officers were going around the neighbourhood after the shooting warning residents of gang activity in the area.
Spokeswoman Const. Natalie Aitken said the home was targeted by a lone suspect.
