A 14-year-old girl from northern Manitoba who had been reported missing Thursday was the victim of homicide, RCMP say.

The grim conclusion was announced Saturday by police after they received the results of an autopsy conducted in Winnipeg.

The dead youngster was identified by RCMP as Heather Mallet from Wabowden, Man., located about 650 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

Police said the girl was reported missing to the RCMP early on Thursday after she had not returned home.

A body was discovered in the community Thursday afternoon around 5:30 p.m. CT, but police declined to say — until now — that it was Mallet.

"Her death is being treated as a homicide," police said in a news release Saturday. "The cause of her death is being withheld."

Homicide investigators from the RCMP's serious crime unit have been assigned to the case.
