Classes have been cancelled at Wawanesa School. (Brady Strachan/CBC)Workers at the Wawanesa School in western Manitoba are pumping water from a flooded crawlspace that has forced the building to close.

Groundwater has risen from a saturated water table and has submerged the heating equipment forcing the shutdown of the heating system.

Crews in the community about 200 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg are manning pumps to move hundreds of thousands of litres of water back into the Souris River, which flows past the school.

The school division told students and staff the school will close at the end of the day Tuesday.

Classes may be held at the town's community hall.

The school division is bringing in geotechnical experts to see if they can find a way to stop the flow of water into the crawlspace.

Meanwhile, at the Roseau River First Nation south of Winnipeg, a few staff are making sure the buildings are safe after 700 residents voluntarily left the reserve when access roads were threatened by floodwaters. They are feeding dogs and cats left behind and keeping an eye on homes, properties and the Roseau River, which was holding steady several feet below the top of the community dike.

The province also released it's latest flood update Tuesday, saying the Assiniboine River continues to rise and is expected to have very high water flows lasting for ten days. The Assiniboine will crest in Brandon sometime between April 29 and May 3.

Just under 2,000 people have been forced to leave their homes to date due to widespread flooding across southern Manitoba.

Officials are also keeping watch on the Shellmouth reservoir in western Manitoba, which may reach spillway levels in the next couple of days. The resevoir is expected to take in near record volumes of water this spring.

The Red River reached near crest at Letellier south of Winnipeg Tuesday at a level about one foot lower than during the flood of 2009.
