A cancer clinic in Brandon is slated to open later this year. It is officially known as the Westman Cancer Centre. (Brandon Regional Health Authority)Cancer patients in western Manitoba will soon no longer be forced to travel to Winnipeg for treatment.
The provincial government is spending $24 million to construct a cancer-treatment centre in Brandon. It will serve up to 300 patients a year who require radiation or chemotherapy.
Ed Ferguson lives in Brandon and is currently undergoing radiation treatment. He says the centre will save him a lot of time in terms of driving the 250 killometres back and forth from home to the Manitoba capital.
“It takes up all your day really,” he said. “I have to take that trip back and forth … And our sessions are only for about 10 minutes.”
The centre is slated to open later this year. A firm date has not been set.
