Charges laid in 2009 Winnipeg shooting death

Two men have been charged in relation to a homicide and attempted homicide in 2009, springing from a shooting in Winnipeg.
Police announced Friday that William Evan Laporte, 21, and an 18-year-old man, are charged with first degree murder in the death of Wayne Roger Michelle.
The pair are also accused of attempted murder of another man, who was 27 at the time. He survived his injuries.
The 18-year-old accused can not be named because he was a youth at the time of the incident and his identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police said the shootings took place in the the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue on June 13, 2009.
Police said emergency crews were called around 10:35 p.m. CT and found two men with gunshot wounds to their mid-sections.
Both were taken to hospital and Michelle died of his injuries.
"The investigation has revealed that the two victims were walking in the area when they were approached by the suspects and a firearm was discharged," police said Friday in a news release.
The two men accused were both in custody, police said.
