A member of Winnipeg's African Mafia street gang has been deported by the Canada Border Services Agency, the federal government reported Wednesday.

Mohamed Mansaray, 25, was removed to his home country of Sierra Leone on Jan. 10, the federal public safety ministry said.

Between 2004 and 2008, Mansaray garnered 22 criminal convictions for offences including assault, robbery and assaulting a police officer, officials said.

The ministry identified Mansaray as an African Mafia member. The gang, which began in Winnipeg around 2004, is a notoriously violent splinter group of another Winnipeg gang, the Mad Cowz.

The Winnipeg Police Service and the Canada Border Services Agency were involved in the effort to remove Mansaray from Canada, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said.

"I am pleased this serious convicted criminal will no longer pose a threat to the safety of Canadians and our communities," Toews said.

Mansaray is at least the 8th African Mafia member to be deported from Canada since the gang's inception.
