A family with an 18-month-old child is in good health after being stranded overnight on a northern Manitoba lake.

Search and rescue teams were dispatched Tuesday evening to find the family, who became lost while travelling by boat from their St. Theresa Point home to Garden Hill on Island Lake, about 500 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.

After not hearing from the 21-year-old man and 18-year-old woman, community members began searching the area without success.

George Leonard, spokesman for the Manitoba Search and Rescue Association, said temperatures were around –11 C and the search went all night.

Police chartered a helicopter and spotted the family on a swampy shore about 1.6 kilometres east of St. Theresa Point.

According to police, they were forced to spend the night on the shore after their boat became swamped by waves.

"When you hear the '18-month-old baby,' your heart's going to stop for a beat because the main thing you're worried about is we got to solve this problem immediately," said Leonard.

The family was found Wednesday morning, taken to a local nursing station and found to be in good condition. Names were not released.

"They were very cold, very tired and very happy that someone found them — just glad to get out of the water," said Leonard, who is calling for all-season roads to be built connecting northern towns so people don't have to travel by water.
