Cadet Warrant officer Lucas Mayo is travelling to Nepal for training. (Department of National Defence) A Winnipeg army cadet is one of sixteen cadets from across Canada who will train at a Mount Everest base camp in Nepal.
Cadet Warrant Officer Lucas Mayo, 18, of the 2701 Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, will trek to Everest Base Camp in early October, followed by glacier training and white-water rafting on the Trisuli River.
Mayo quit his job on a bee farm to train full time, saying he's in pretty good shape and since he's from Manitoba he's already accustomed to the cold.
"It feels great. I'm excited," said Mayo. "I don't know really what to expect. I don't want to get too excited but it's really exhilarating. A lot of people can't say they've ... gone to Mount Everest. It's something pretty huge."
The group of Canadians will practice high-altitude trekking and backpacking. The Cadet Program is a national program for youth aged 12 to 18, sponsored by the Department of National Defence in partnership with three civilian organizations: the Navy League, Army Cadet League, and Air Cadet League.
