Winnipeg police have charged a storeowner with selling mouthwash as an intoxicant.

The 31-year-old man was allegedly selling "a variety of antiseptic mouthwash products" to people desperate to get alcohol.

The products were sold from the man's West End convenience store at triple or quadruple the regular price, police said.

The name or location of the store was not released by police, who also did not say how much mouthwash the man is alleged to have improperly sold.

The investigation was sparked by complaints from residents in the area.

The storeowner is facing a maximum fine of $5,000.

It's the second time in eight months that a West End convenience store was caught inflating prices and selling products containing high alcohol content as intoxicants.

A man, 61, and woman, 52, were charged in November after police found they were selling mouthwash and hairspray as booze from the St. Matthew's Food Centre.

Area residents complained to police after people who drank the products were urinating and defecating nearby and tossing the empty bottles all over.
