A WestJet airplane headed to Halifax from Calgary made an emergency landing in Winnipeg Tuesday after a passenger tried to open a door to the outside in mid-flight.

The passenger, a 47-year-old woman from St. John's, was restrained by cabin crew and other passengers, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.

During the struggle, the woman assaulted an airline employee and a 77-year-old male passenger, police allege.

The man suffered minor injuries.

The incident happened at about 2 p.m. Tuesday, roughly an hour into the flight from Calgary to Halifax.

There were 131 people on board at the time.

The woman was arrested and charged with mischief, assault, endangering the safety of an aircraft and failing to comply with instruction of the cabin crew.

She is in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
