The City of Winnipeg's annual assault on mosquitos will begin Saturday at 9:30 p.m. CT if weather conditions are right.

Officially, the work is known as the Adult Nuisance Mosquito Fogging Program.

The city uses malathion to control adult mosquitos. The insecticide, which has been registered for use in Canada since the 1950s, is applied by fogging. The equipment creates a fine mist of about 60 grams of malathion per hectare.

The program will begin Saturday night, so long as winds are light.

Trucks start fogging at 9:30 and continue until 6:30 in the morning.

Residents can ask to have their properties put on a no-spray list, which would create a 100-metre spray-free buffer around their land.

Health Canada suggests people in areas being sprayed take some precautions, including staying indoors, closing windows and turning off the air-conditioning before the spraying starts. When it's over, residents should wash homegrown vegetables before eating and rinse off outdoor furniture.
