The investigation into the disturbing physical assault of Dustin LaFortune, who turned up at a Regina hospital in April, has not resulted in any charges, police said Tuesday.

"The victim remains in hospital and police are continuing this investigation," police said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon.

For the first time, Regina police laid out some details of how they have been handling the case.

According to the news release, police were called at 9:43 a.m. CST on April 16 about a man who appeared to be the victim of an assault.

The man was not able to give a statement, but police identified him as Dustin LaFortune, 26, and found that he had been reported missing from Calgary on April 12.

The family member who reported LaFortune missing said he was last seen on February 28, Regina police said.

LaFortune, who is originally from Winnipeg, was interviewed by Regina police on May 14.

"Since that time, police have continued to communicate with the victim in an effort to determine how and when his injuries were caused," the statement added.

Police won't say whether they have any suspects in the case.

LaFortune has recently been seen in video posted to the internet site YouTube. Although he speaks in a laboured manner, he appears to have made some progress in recovering from his injuries.

According to his family, LaFortune was severely underweight when he showed up at the hospital and had suffered a variety of disturbing injuries.

They have said they believe he was assaulted over a long period of time.

It is still not known how LaFortune came to be in Regina.
