A major fire in St. Boniface Thursday night destroyed a warehouse and caused an estimated $10-million damage.

Fire crews responded to a two-alarm blaze on the property at Burron Lumber — Lagimodiere Boulevard and and Marion Street —just before 10:30 p.m.

A warehouse containing equipment, highly flammable petroleum products and chemicals was destroyed. The fire was so persistent it continued to flare up Friday morning.

Property owner Ray Burron said the warehouse was rented to a man who operates street-cleaning equipment.

"He's got a lot of equipment and a lot of gas and oil and fuel, and this is what exploded," said Burron. "And it caused a terrible amount of damage. Everything was gone. When I went to look at the building, there was no building left."

Residents of one home near the scene were briefly evacuated and were left to spend a tense and sleepless night but there were no injuries.

The fire commissioner's office is investigating.
