A Manitoba RCMP officer has been charged with trying to defraud Manitoba Public Insurance.

Cpl. Houman Shoaai, 39, was charged Monday with attempted fraud over $5,000, according to a news release issued by the RCMP on Wednesday.

Shoaai filed an Autopac claim on July 7, 2009, related to damage that occurred to his personal vehicle near the community of Elphinstone, where he is posted.

An investigation into the claim, conducted by MPI, found inconsistencies to the claim and led to a further probe.

On April 22, the RCMP was notified by MPI of the investigation findings, as well as the results of an independent opinion from Manitoba Justice, which had been sought out by MPI.

No further details of the alleged offence were released by the RCMP.

Shoaai, who was off-duty when the incident occurred, has been ordered to appear in court in Minnedosa on June 29.

An internal disciplinary process has also been initiated and Shoaai has been reassigned to administrative duties while that is undertaken.

Elphinstone is located about 260 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
