A 47-year-old man from Ontario was killed Tuesday in a fiery crash on Highway 17A near Kenora.

The man was driving a semi-trailer at about 3 a.m. when it veered out of the eastbound lanes, then crossed the westbound lanes and hit an embankment, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

The semi then burst into flames and was destroyed.

The driver, who name was not released, was unable to get out of the vehicle, police said.

He was from Cardinal, Ont., located south of Ottawa near the U.S. border.

The highway was closed for several hours but has since reopened. However, the OPP caution that the passing lane may still be closed for the next day as the investigation continues.

Kenora is located about 200 kilometres east of Winnipeg, in Northwestern Ontario.
