One of the people who had been musing about running for mayor in Winnipeg has decided against taking the leap.

Russ Wyatt has told CBC News he will instead seek re-election as city councillor in his Transcona ward.

Wyatt said he considered running for mayor because he wanted to make sure Mayor Sam Katz didn't simply walk through the election unchallenged.

But it appears there will be a close contest with former NDP MP Judy Wasylicia-Leis expected to soon announce her candidacy.

She announced this week that she is resigning the Winnipeg North federal seat she has held since 1997.

Wasylycia-Leis, 58, said she has been urged by a number of people to take a run at the mayor's chair. Although she hasn't yet decided, it is widely expected she will throw her hat in the ring next week.

Coun. Lillian Thomas, who officially announced her candidacy last month, is also having second thoughts. She hinted strongly this week that she would not run if Wasylicia-Leis does.

Candidates can officially register for the Oct. 27 civic election next Monday.
