The Manitoba and federal governments are pitching in $1.8 million to improve Manitoba's music industry.

The funding will go to Manitoba Music, a not-for-profit industry association, to help local artists and companies market their music internationally, stated a press release issued by the province on Tuesday.

Manitoba Music will become the export development agent, providing a range of supports to help its members market products and services worldwide.

"Manitoba Music is considered to be the hub of our province's vibrant music community," said Peter Bjornson, minister of entrepreneurship, training and trade.

The money is part of a four-year plan under the Canada-Manitoba Western Economic Partnership Agreement (WEPA).

In addition to the marketing opportunities, the funding is intended to help musicians adapt to the changing music business environment, such as the digital economy.

"Manitoba is known internationally for producing ground-breaking artists and music companies," said John Kendle, Manitoba Music's president.

"[The funding] will allow us to offer new and innovative programming to bolster the activity of our industry, increase the capacity of our companies, and ensure that Manitoba music reaches beyond our borders."
