The Manitoba government is offering more legal funding to the family of a man who died after waiting for 34 hours in a hospital emergency room.

Justice Minister Andrew Swan says the province is willing to cover up to $110,000 in legal fees for Brian Sinclair's family.

The government originally offered $40,000, but a provincial court judge said the province had a moral obligation to pay more than the basic legal aid rate.

The ruling was not legally binding, but Swan says he realizes more money is appropriate.

The money will help the family take part in an upcoming inquest into Sinclair's death.

"The Sinclair family is entitled to be part of this, and we think the offer we are now making will allow them to fully participate, Swan said. "We are hopeful they will accept that proposal."

Sinclair relatives have not yet said whether they will accept the province's offer.

The 45-year-old double amputee died of a preventable bladder infection while he was waiting to be helped at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre.
