An Icelandic airline is betting Winnipeg will become a big destination for European travelers once the Canadian Museum for Human Rights opens.

Iceland Express will start offering non-stop flights between Winnipeg and London, England, with a fuel stop in Reykjavik, beginning in June.

Matthias Imsland, the CEO of Iceland Express, said the new federal museum could draw significant numbers of visitors, just as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, has since it opened in 1997.

"The tourist industry just went up 100 per cent, so I think there could be a lot of interest, especially in Europe, to come and see the museum [in Winnipeg]," he said.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is scheduled to open in 2012 at Winnipeg's historic Forks market area.

The Iceland Express flights will be offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Aside from the connection to the museum, the company said it chose to offer flights to Reykjavik in order to connect Iceland to Manitoba.

The Gimli area, north of Winnipeg, is home to the largest concentration of people of Icelandic ancestry outside of Iceland and hosts an annual Icelandic Festival.
