Warming huts taking shape at The Forks

Work is well underway to build a warming hut which will resemble a sunspot along the skating trail at The Forks in Winnipeg. (James Turner/CBC)Five new warming huts along Manitoba's most famous winter trail will feature some "out there" designs, say provincial tourism officials.
One hut uses pop cans among its building materials, another resembles a large piece of crumpled aluminum foil and a third is an orange orb.
Created by artists and architects on the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail at The Forks in Winnipeg, the huts are for use by skaters, skiers and strollers.
This warming hut is called Carcass, and "was inspired by the decrepit barns" that dot the rural landscape in Manitoba. It's expected to debut Feb. 1 at The Forks. (James Turner/CBC)The "exposition on ice" — part of the yearlong Manitoba Homecoming 2010 celebration of festivals and other events — is intended to showcase art and architecture in a setting that is "otherwise reserved for the mundane and practical," says Peter Hargraves of Sputnik Architecture, one of the organizers.
"In the same way we feel cold and warmth, these huts are meant to evoke feelings and create dialogue.
After construction on land the huts will be moved to the ice surface by Feb. 1.
