A dozen hogs died in a barn fire just west of Winnipeg Thursday afternoon.

The hogs belonged to Sunnybrook Swine Inc. of Manitoba and were in a barn in the Rural Municipality of MacDonald when the fire broke out at about 1:45 p.m.

The RCMP initially stated that 3,000 hogs were killed in the blaze but that number was later revised to 12, although 3,000 were in the barn at the time.

Seven employees were also inside the barn but escaped without injury, police said.

Fire crews from three communities — MacDonald, Morris and Rosenort — helped extinguish the flames.

The cause of the fire and a damage estimate have yet to be determined, RCMP said.
