A commercial flight from Ontario to the small Manitoba community of Bloodvein ended in a belly landing after the pilot failed to deploy the Piper Navajo Chieftain's landing gear on Friday.

Everyone on board, including the pilot and passengers — nine adults and four children — was OK, according to the local detachment of the RCMP which reported the incident Saturday afternoon.

The plane, however, was damaged in the mishap.

It has since been moved out of the way and the Bloodvein airport, which had temporarily closed, has reopened.

Bloodvein is a First Nation about 250 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

RCMP said federal transportation officials had been notified and early indications were that the cause of the mishap was pilot error. The belly landing took place around 4:30 pm. at the Bloodvein River Airport. It is listed on databases as a soft surface runway that is suitable for small civilian aircraft.

It was not reported where the flight originated.
