Hefney, the CFL West nominee for rookie of the year, has signed with the struggling NFL club.
"While we wish him the best with Detroit, we will certainly welcome him back to help solidify our defence in 2010 if the opportunity arises," said interim Bombers vice-president of football operations, Ross Hodgkinson.
The 24-year-old came to Winnipeg after failing to get regular playing time in the NFL with Tampa Bay and Philadelphia.
The Rock Hill, S.C., native responded with 66 defensive tackles, four interceptions and five special teams tackles for the Blue Bombers. In addition to his rookie nomination, Hefney was named to the CFL all-star team.
Hefney went undrafted by the NFL despite being a four-year starter with Tennessee in college on a defence that included 2008 NFL rookie of the year Jerod Mayo (New England).
Detroit (2-14), gave up 35 passing touchdowns with just nine interceptions, the worst totals in the NFL. Still, Hefney is aware there are no guarantees and is keeping the Bombers in mind.
"I had a great experience with Winnipeg last season, and really enjoyed my first season in the CFL. If things don't work out with the Lions I look forward to returning to Winnipeg," Hefney said in a statement.
