About 645 homes managed by the Manitoba Métis Federation will be getting much needed repairs and upgrades, politicians in the province announced Friday.

The federal and provincial governments have allocated $4.3 million to Community Housing Managers of Manitoba, an agency of the federation.

The money works out to an average of $6,667 per home.

"Its important that we showcase and try to find ways of preserving these houses," said David Chartrand, the federation's president. "We know by this first investment … we're going to save over 600 homes for at least another 10 or 20 years to come."

The money is for homes in rural and remote areas of Manitoba.

"When we retrofit these houses they'll be like brand new again," Chartrand said.
