Heavily armed members of the Winnipeg police tactical unit were at the scene of a triple shooting in the city early Saturday. (CBC)Violence erupted in a Winnipeg neighbourhood around midnight Friday night leaving two men dead from gunshot wounds and a third male in hospital.
"We had three victims who all received a gunshot wound," Sgt. Kelly Dennison told CBC News Saturday morning. "Two of them succumbed to their injuries. One of them remains in hospital in guarded conditions."
In a news release issued later Saturday, police identified the slain men as Matthew Lawrence Victor Reynolds and Tyler Hawula, both 18. The wounded person is 17.
Police said they received a 911 call about 12:15 a.m. about shots fired in a home on the 400 block of Martin Avenue.
An unidentified man suffering a gunshot wound is moved to a waiting ambulance. Police in Winnipeg later reported that the man was recovering from his wounds. (CBC)Officers and emergency medical teams rushed to the scene where they found the three victims. As EMS tended to the victims, heavily armed officers from the police tactical unit arrived to help police secure the area.
Const. Jason Michalyshen, a spokesman for the Winnipeg police, told reporters Saturday that about 20 to 30 young people were at a party when an unspecified number of assailants arrived and shot the three victims with a large calibre weapon.
Michalyshen said it was too soon in the investigation to say whether each of the victims had been targeted. He also said there was no indication that the matter was related to gang activities.
No arrests have been reported.
