A 22-year-old woman is facing a charge of fraud under $5,000 amid allegations she went door-to-door in a Winnipeg neighbourhood posing as a fundraiser for a school.
Officials from Greenway School said no such campaign is underway, but they received several calls complaining about a young woman asking for money.
On Friday, police said they got a tip from a person who lives on Cambridge Street, in the River Heights area, who had just been visited by a canvasser.
The resident had heard media reports of a scam and phoned police. Officers caught up to the woman and arrested her.
In addition to one charge of fraud, more charges are likely, police said.
The incident highlights the need to end door-to-door fundraising by non-profit groups, the Manitoba branch of the Better Business Bureau said.
"This is an archaic way of fundraising from the past," Amara Silva told CBC News. "The trust-and-handshake type of deals that perhaps were appropriate in days gone by are not appropriate today."
