The principal of a Winnipeg school is warning people to be aware about someone going door-to-door, claiming to be raising money for the school.
Although Greenway School is located on Burnell Street west of the downtown core, people living as far away as the neighbourhoods of Fort Rouge and River Heights — in the city's southwest section — have been approached for donations, said principal Barbara Myron.
'We don't have [a] record of that parent actually being in our school, being a parent in our school.'—Greenway School principal Barbara Myron
The person soliciting the money is described as a young woman, believed to be between the ages of 17 and 20, who claims to have a child in the school.
"She says that she's a mother from the school and fundraising on behalf of her young child that's in nursery, but we don't [a] have record of that parent actually being in our school, being a parent in our school," said Myron.
Further, the school and the entire Winnipeg School Division have a policy against door-to-door fundraising, Myron said, noting she has been receiving complaints about the woman since the end of October.
She has forwarded the complaints to the police, who are investigating.
"I think that from the number of people that have called, there's probably many more that have actually given money to this individual," said Myron.
"Some people have indicated they saw quite a thick sheet [of names] on her clipboard."
