A police pursuit on the northern outskirts of Winnipeg took officers across land, through brush and even into a swamp on a borrowed ATV to capture two suspects, the RCMP said Thursday.

Cpl. Kelvin Harder said police from the Oakbank, Man., detachment were called at 2:20 p.m. CT on Wednesday to a break-in that was in progress at a rural home on Dundee-Garson Road.

A witness spotted three suspects leaving the scene in a grey sedan and police set up a perimeter to box them in, Harder said.

While police said one suspect bailed out of the vehicle and escaped on foot, the other two continued on in the car, later ditching it in a yard and running into the brush along Provincial Road 206.

At about 4 p.m., Harder said the two were spotted riding an allegedly stolen all-terrain vehicle and were chased to the edge of a swamp by police. A local farmer lent officers his own ATV to enable officers to follow them, Harder said.

While the suspects' ATV was found abandoned soon after, a police dog tracked them down and they were arrested, Harder said.

Two men, aged 25 and 22, from Winnipeg are in custody and charged with breaking-and-entering, possession of stolen property and flight from police.

The 22-year-old was also arrested on four outstanding warrants for offences including assault and uttering threats. Both will make their first court appearances in Winnipeg on Friday, Harder said.

The third suspect remains at large and police continue to investigate.
