An alleged drunk driver who had a young child as a passenger led police on a prolonged high-speed chase near Dauphin, Man. on Saturday afternoon, RCMP say.

Officers had to lay down two spike belts to disable the woman's car and bring an end to the dangerous situation, Const. Michael Carr said.

Police said events unfolded after a witness called police saying a vehicle had smashed into a light standard in the small community of Winnipegosis, about 80 kilometres north of Dauphin.

Officers said they then spotted the vehicle travelling along Highway 20, and chased it for about 60 kilometres.

Carr said the vehicle became disabled and finally stopped after it ran over the spike belts. A 37-year-old woman was taken from the car, along with a seven-year-old child who was riding in the front seat.

Carr said charges of impaired driving, dangerous driving, flight from police and refusing to provide a breath sample are pending against the woman.

RCMP did not identify her.

The woman is also accused of breaching the conditions of a probation order, police said.

There were no injuries.
