Nine-month-old Jacob Emond began throwing up on Sunday after drinking baby formula that had expired in January 2009. (CBC)A Winnipeg man is furious with a local drugstore for selling expired formula that he says made his baby sick earlier this week.
Jose Emond said he bought the formula Sunday night at the Shoppers Drug Mart on Dakota Street in the city's St. Vital neighbourhood. He fed it to his nine-month-old son, Jacob, and the baby began vomiting within two hours, Emond said.
The family took Jacob to the doctor, but it wasn't until later that Emond's wife noticed the formula was older than their baby — its expiry date had passed nearly a year ago.
"It made me sick to my stomach. I went into Shoppers but before I brought the formula to the attention of the managers I brought my camera and I was really curious," Emond said. "I went down the baby aisle and [saw] the exact same brand. There were two cases of it left on the shelf and both of them were expired.
A Shoppers Drug Mart store pulled the expired baby formula from the shelf after it was brought to their attention. (CBC)"As soon as I saw that then … I got really mad."
After he raised the matter with store management, Emond said he saw store staff removing the cases of other expired product.
Shoppers Drug Mart has not responded to requests for comment from CBC News.
