A police standoff that erupted after a stabbing in the remote community of Flin Flon, Man., has ended peacefully after 17 hours, RCMP said Thursday.

Sgt. Nolan Suss said officers were called at about 8 p.m. Wednesday to a home in the northern Manitoba town after a 55-year-old man allegedly stabbed a woman during a domestic argument.

The alleged victim, 47, fled the home with another woman and called police, Suss said in a statement. When officers arrived, the man barricaded himself in the home, police said.

Emergency response teams from Winnipeg and Saskatchewan were called in to assist in the standoff, Suss said. Events came to a peaceful conclusion when the man surrendered at 1 p.m. Thursday, RCMP said.

He is now in custody and charges are pending, Suss said.

Police said the woman who was stabbed was taken to hospital in Winnipeg by air ambulance. She is listed in stable condition with injuries that are not life-threatening, Suss said.

Flin Flon is on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, about 800 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
