Gary Doer has handed over the Manitoba premier's office to his successor, Greg Selinger.

Doer smiled and shook hands with Selinger on Sunday as the two men sat across a large table inside the premier's office at the Manitoba legislature.

Doer said he and Selinger, who served as his finance minister since 1999, always worked well together and said Selinger knows government issues "better than anyone."

Doer is stepping down to become Canada's ambassador to the U.S.

Selinger was elected to replace Doer at the New Democratic Party's leadership convention in Winnipeg on Saturday, defeating his rival, Steve Ashton, by a large margin.
