A bank robbery in Winnipeg's Osborne Village on Saturday disrupted the community for several hours while police investigated a suspicious package left behind by the thief.

While a bomb disposal unit was sent to the scene and removed a package from the business, police say there was no explosive and — while they are still searching for a suspect — the neighbourhood can return to normal.

Vehicle and pedestrian traffic was diverted for much of the afternoon, with police blocking off Osborne Street between Stradbrook Avenue and River Avenue.

As many as nine police cars were on the scene at one point.

A nearby pub was also evacuated by police.

Winnipeg police Const. Jason Michalyshen said the suspicious package was removed from the building without incident.

Bank employees were interviewed as the police investigation continued.
