The union representing staff at a Howard Johnson hotel in Winnipeg alleges the franchise owner's paycheques are bouncing.
There are 25 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers union who are employed at the hotel on Ellice Avenue, said union representative Michelle Masserey.
The last payday was Oct. 5 but the cheques weren't handed out until the next day. When the employees tried to cash the cheques, they bounced because there wasn't enough money in the company account, Masserey said.
"Finally, on Friday at about, I would say, 3:30 p.m. there was enough money deposited [and] they were able to and go cash their cheques," Masserey said. "And they were so fed up by Friday, they sat at the bank all day waiting for that deposit to be made. They didn't go back to work."
The money only went so far, however. Eight staff are still waiting to be paid, she said.
The union also alleges the franchise owner, based in Vancouver, has kept union dues collected from the staff.
CBC News has phoned the owner for comment, but the calls were not immediately returned.
