One of the men vying to become Manitoba's next premier wants to make it easier for workers to unionize.

Steve Ashton said on Friday he thinks provincial legislation that requires 65 per cent of workers to sign union cards for automatic certification is too high.

Ashton is also promising to take steps to ensure pensions are protected in both the public and private sectors. He said that could include more government money for civil servant pensions.

Ashton has already promised to ban businesses from using replacement workers during strikes, and is now promoting himself as the best candidate for the labour movement.

The MLA for Thompson is running against St. Boniface MLA Greg Selinger for the leadership of the governing New Democratic Party.

They both resigned from cabinet positions this month to seek the leadership when outgoing premier Gary Doer announced he was stepping down. He has since been named Canada's next ambassador to the U.S.

NDP delegates will choose a new leader at a convention set for Oct. 17.
