Manitobans would get incentives to go green should Manitoba NDP leadership candidate Andrew Swan become the province's next premier.

Swan said Friday he would start a rebate program worth up to $1,500 for homeowners who install upgrades such as dual-flush toilets, solar panels and geothermal heating.

For multi-unit landlords, the rebates could total as much as $5,000.

To lead by example, Swan said he would push for all public schools in the province to be outfitted with dual flush toilets over the next three years.

Green technology would also be exempt from Manitoba's provincial sales tax, said Swan, who has stated his opposition to the federal government's desire for all provinces to merge the PST and GST under a harmonized sales tax.

NDP delegates will choose their leader on leader Oct. 17. The winner will replace outgoing premier Gary Doer, who has been named Canada's next ambassador to the U.S.

Swan is running against Greg Selinger and Steve Ashton. They all resigned from cabinet to seek the party leadership.
