RCMP taped off a home in West St. Paul, just north of Winnipeg, where a 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death on Sunday. (CBC) A 16-year-old boy was arrested Monday for the stabbing death of a 15-year-old boy on the weekend. Yellow police tape was still stretched across the driveway of a large two-storey home on Dearman Road in the rural municipality of West St. Paul on Monday.
Residents in the quiet community, just north of Winnipeg's city limits, were alarmed by the incident.
Mary Ann Bernardin, who also lives on Dearman Road, was in the swimming pool in her backyard with a friend when they heard the sirens around 4:30 p.m. She told CBC News that several neighbours asked police about what happened.
"They were told that these children were together and something happened and there was a stabbing," she said, adding the neighbours were told about three boys were in the house.
A nurse who also lives on the street was called to try to resuscitate the victim, Bernardin added.
"Somebody called her and she went down there to try and help the boy," she said.
Other neighbours told CBC News on Sunday the boy had died, but that was not confirmed by the RCMP until Monday morning.
RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Line Karpish said both the victim and accused are residents of West St. Paul. The victim's identity is not being released at this time, while the accused cannot be identified because he is a youth, RCMP said.
Counsellors, psychologists brought into school
Class was delayed by half an hour Monday morning at West Kildonan Collegiate, where the victim was a Grade 10 student.
Brian O'Leary, superintendent of the Seven Oaks School Division, said the move was to enable teachers to get some guidance on how to respond to the students about the death.
Drop-in rooms staffed by counsellors and school psychologists were also set up for students who wanted to talk about the tragedy, he said.
"They're too young to be dealing with this but they have to be dealing with it, so we're going to support them in getting through this. It's a tragedy for teachers and a tragedy for a lot of kids," O'leary said.
"Teachers [are] are aware of the kids in this boy's circle of friends and will be paying special attention to those kids as they deal with this."
An autopsy on the victim has been scheduled at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg on Monday.
The accused is in custody and the investigation is continuing, Karpish said.
