Twenty more River East Collegiate students in North Kildonan have been slapped with suspensions after a hazing incident involving younger students.

The River East-Transcona School Division said Wednesday the total number of students handed one- to three-week suspensions is now 25 — 16 boys and nine girls.

The number includes five students suspended a week ago.

Division superintendent Dennis Pottage said the incident involved Grade 12 students using parts of a hockey stick to paddle some incoming Grade 10 freshman students, or "freshies." The senior students also threw water on some of them.

Pottage said the incident came to light after parents of some of the hazed students complained to the school.
