A semi-trailer struck and derailed a train shortly around 4 p.m. Tuesday just north of Winnipeg.

The 65-year-old man who was driving the semi had to be extricated from the vehicle with the Jaws of Life. He was taken to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg by ambulance in stable condition.

According to RCMP, the train was entering the crossing near Wenzel Street on the North Perimeter Highway in the Rural Municipality of Springfield.

The crossing lights were activated and operational at the time, police said. Approximately four or five vehicles were stopped at the crossing when the approaching semi suddenly swung into the left lane and hit the Central Manitoba Railway train.

Damage to the semi, which was hauling peat moss, was extensive. The train derailed from the collision and equipment had to be brought in to right the train cars.

As a result, a number of roads in the area were closed, including a section of the east Perimeter Highway. All roads were reopened by 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Police provided no further information on the injuries sustained by the driver of the semi or if any people aboard the train were hurt.

The investigation into the cause of the collision is continuing, although alcohol is not considered a factor, police said.
