Five students at River East Collegiate in Winnipeg have been slapped with weeklong suspensions for hazing some younger students.

Division superintendent Dennis Pottage said the Grade 12 students used parts of a hockey stick to paddle some incoming Grade 10 freshman students, or "freshies." The senior students also threw water on some of them.

"Basically just harassing them," said Pottage.

He said officials with the school were notified of the incident by parents of the Grade 10 students.

The division is continuing its investigation to make sure such behaviour doesn't happen again, Pottage said.

He said the division wants "to stop it, and we don't want it to happen again."
