Two people have been charged with running a brothel in Winnipeg, and several others face related charges, police said Wednesday.
According to police, investigations by the vice unit between June 2 and 24 focused on a residence in the 500 block of Stiles Street in the city's Wolseley neighbourhood.
A number of rooms within the residence were being rented to sex-trade workers for illegal sexual activity, police said. As well, one of the occupants of the home was allegedly involved in the sex trade and directly involved with the other sex-trade workers by way of booking appointments for the consumers, police said.
On June 24, officers executed a search warrant at the residence, and seized a number of items relating to management of a sex-trade business.
Barbara Ileen McIntosh, 45, and Donald Bruce McIntosh, 53, have been charged with keeping a common bawdy house and several other prostitution-related charges. Their relationship was not revealed by police.
Barbara McIntosh was also charged with possessing a controlled drug or substance. Both were released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
"These individuals were acting in a sense almost as managers. They were running a facility, and not only were they running the facility, they were benefitting by way of allowing individuals to attend and use the residence for sexual acts," alleged police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen.
Several other people have also been arrested in connection with the investigation, including three females — two aged 19 and one aged 23 — and two males, aged 19 and 17.
The females and the 19-year-old man are facing charges of participating in a common bawdy house. The 17-year-old is facing drug charges. All four have been released on a promise to appear.
The investigation is continuing, police said.
