The town of Killarney is working on a curfew to keep young people off the streets after 1 a.m.

Administrators are in the process of drafting a bylaw that would apply to all children 17 years old and younger. The move is a reaction to a rash of vandalism and late night hijinks that have plagued the community 220 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg, Mayor Rick Pauls said.

"They're out jumping around on rooftops on Main Street; they've been dancing around on a few vehicles," he said. "We've had some of our picnic tables and park benches thrown into our lake."

The RCMP believe most of the mischief is being committed by youths aged 12 to 14.

Once the bylaw is ready for debate it must be approved by council. If passed, the new curfew would come into effect on Oct. 1.

Youths caught breaking the curfew would be fined $250.
