Residents in central Manitoba are being warned about a possible telemarketing scam targetting the area.
The Swan River RCMP issued an alert on Wednesday, advising people that some local residents have received telephone calls from individuals claiming to represent the Canadian Police Association.
The caller goes into a sales pitch, asking for donations to support community policing programs, and claims association with the RCMP. The individual may even refer to specific communities within the local area to lend an air of credibility to the solicitation, the RCMP stated in a news release.
In another solicitation, the individual claims to represent the Canadian Police Association and requests a monetary contribution for a so-called Child School System. The solicitor says the donation will be used to protect children from child predators, according to RCMP.
The solicitor, who claims to be part of a nation-wide campaign, suggests donations in the $100 range and then requests a credit card number from the person they are calling.
The RCMP in Swan River, located about 500 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, does not deliver any programs funded by the Canadian Police Association, nor does it engage in, endorse or conduct telephone solicitations to raise funds for community policing programs, a release stated.
Anyone who receives telephone sales calls in which individuals solicit donations for community-policing programs is at risk of being a victim of fraud, RCMP warned.
