A fire at a barn near Steinbach, Man., on Tuesday killed an estimated 25,000 chickens and caused $900,000 in damage.

The blaze broke out around 1:30 a.m. in the rural municipality of Hanover, near Highways 205 and 52, about 50 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg. The fire consumed one of two attached barns, burning it to the ground, according to RCMP.

Due to the quick response of the local fire departments from the communities of Grunthal, Hanover and Kleefeld, the second barn was saved, police said.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner is investigating.

The Manitoba government announced last week that it is looking to implement building codes for farm construction in the wake of several serious hog barn fires this year.

In the last 18 months, nearly 37,000 farm animals have died in fires in the province.

On July 1, as many as 5,500 hogs died in a blaze near Zhoda, about 80 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg.
